'A' Squadron Sherman tank, Normandy, 1944.

Photograph from an album compiled by Major W H J Sale, MC, 3/4 County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North West Europe.

The American-built Sherman medium tank was the mainstay of the Allied armoured formations that landed in Normandy in June 1944. Although its armour was thinner than that of the heaviest German tanks, it was comparatively fast and manoeuvreable, mechanically reliable and easy to manufacture and service.
