Major-General Sir James Hope Grant, Commander Anglo-French expedition to China, 1860.

Photograph by Felice Beato (1825-1907), 2nd China War, 1860.

Major-General (later General) Sir James Hope Grant (1808-1875) was another British Officer with a wealth of experience in the colonial campaigns of the mid nineteenth century. He distinguished himself in the 1st China War, the Anglo-Sikh Wars and in the suppression of the Indian Mutiny and was thus ideally suited to command the expedition against China in 1860, a position that he executed with consummate skill.
