'Mutineers surprised by Her Majesty's 9th Lancers', 1867.
Coloured lithograph from 'The Campaign in India 1857-58' by William Simpson, E Walker and others, after G F Atkinson, published by Day and Son, 1857-1858.
During the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers earned the nickname 'the Delhi Spearmen', a name which is believed to have been given to them by the mutineers themselves. They took part in the Siege of Delhi and the Relief of Lucknow.
