The 8th Hussars were part of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War and fought at the Battles of the Alma and Balaklava (1854). During the latter engagement they took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade, losing two officers and 19 other ranks killed and two officers and 18 other ranks wounded. One officer and seven other ranks were taken prisoner by the Russians.
