The sentry is armed with a Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle with fixed bayonet. In 1908 the 22nd Punjabis were stationed on the North West Frontier and consisted of four companies of Punjabi Muslims, two companies of Pathans and two of Jat Sikhs. In 1902 a detachment of the regiment had been sent to England to form one of the honour guards at the coronation of King Edward VII.
