Orderly boy, Madras Army, 1835 (c).

Watercolour by a Company artist of the Tanjore school, 1835 (c).

The three presidency armies of Bengal, Bombay and Madras operated independently. The Madras Army was more professional than Bengal and Bombay, and more advanced in keeping up with new technology. The different roles represented here include a rifleman; the Madras Army issued rifles several decades before the other presidencies.
