A soldier of the 1st Chinese Regiment, in full dress, 1900.

Oil on board by unknown artist, 1900 (c).

The 1st Chinese Regiment, an infantry battalion raised in the British enclave of Wei Hai Wei on the northern coast of the Shantung Peninsular in northern China, was established in 1898. During the 3rd China War (Boxer Rebellion) (1900) the regiment's loyal conduct made a highly favourable mark on the British and their allies, particularly amongst those officers seconded to the regiment from the British Army.
