Afghan tribesmen at a durbar, 1879 (c).

Photograph, 2nd Afghan War, 1879 (c).

After Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts had occupied the Afghan capital in October 1879, the British met with many of the tribal leaders in order to win their support for a political settlement and negotiate peace terms. British efforts to gain tribal support also involved the payment of large cash subsidies.
