'Zemendars of Jullundur District', 1850 (c).

Watercolour on European paper, by a Company artist, Punjab, 1850 (c).

The Sikh Empire which Ranjit Singh built up in the fertile Punjab (literally 'five rivers') was large and well-run during his lifetime. Here the artist delights in the differences between the inhabitants, particularly the oversized zemindar (land owner) and his skinny colleague.
