D-Day, 6 June 1944, marked the start of the Allied invasion of Normandy, Operation OVERLORD. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British) on 6 June 1944. Around 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7,900 airborne troops.

Some of the commandos from Headquarters 4th Special Service Brigade pictured are manhandling bicycles and Welbikes, small motorcycles originally developed for use by Special Operations Executive and Airborne Forces.
