Afghan tribesmen rest in Babur's gardens, Jalalabad, 1878.

Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War, 1878.

After forcing the Khyber Pass and capturing Ali Masjid, the Peshawar Valley Field Force occupied Jalalabad in December 1878. Burke accompanied the troops as an unofficial photographer and took a number of images of the city and its surroundings. The walled gardens depicted here were planted by Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur (1483-1530), the first Moghul Emperor, in the 16th century.
