'Charge of HM 14th Light Dragoons at the Battle of Ramnuggur', 22 November 1848.

Coloured aquatint by J Harris after H Martens, published by Rudolph Ackermann, 26 January 1851.

The Battle of Ramnagar was fought on the banks of the River Chenab in the Punjab on 22 November 1848. It took place between British and Sikh forces during the 2nd Sikh War (1848-1849). The British were led by Sir Hugh Gough, while the Sikhs were led by Sher Singh Attariwalla. During the battle Gough ordered the 14th Light Dragoons and the 5th Bengal Light Cavalry to attack the Sikh cavalry. They drove back the Sikhs but then came under heavy artillery fire and were forced to retire. The commander of the 14th Light Dragoons, Colonel William Havelock, then led another charge which was also defeated.
