'Maidan Malicks', Kabul, 1879 (c).

Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War, 1879 (c).

This group of maliks (village headmen) were from the Maidan valley in the Kabul district. Burke took their photograph when he was with General Frederick Roberts' Kabul Field Force which had first entered the city in October 1879. He remained with the soldiers, photographing the city and its inhabitants, until the Field Force's departure in May 1880.
