During World War Two (1939-1945) over 100,000 men served in 40 Gurkha battalions in battles in the Western Desert, Italy, Greece, Malaya, Singapore and Burma. In this image, two wounded Gurkhas are carried to safety by mule. The latter proved very useful in the mountainous Italian terrain.
