Mark I tank and infantry on the Western Front, 1916 (c).

Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916 (c).

Heavily loaded British infantry advance alongside a Mark I tank across the desolate wasteland of the Western Front. The tank is fitted with wire mesh to deflect enemy grenades and a steering tail at the rear. This latter feature was removed from subsequent models of this tank.

From a photograph album compiled by Lord Henry Seymour Rawlinson while Commander in Chief in India.
