Omdurman: The First Battle - 6.30 a.m. 2 September 1898.

Chromolithograph by A Sutherland, published by G W Bacon and Company, 1898.

The battle took place 6.4 km. (four miles) outside Omdurman, just north of Khartoum and marked the culmination of Major-General Sir Horatio Herbert (later Field Marshal, 1st Earl) Kitchener's campaign for the re-conquest of the Sudan. Although this illustration depicts the British wearing red uniforms, these had in fact been superseded by khaki by the time of the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1898).
